- As lovers, Nalmoe, and Seolwoo lived in a peaceful village. This peace was compromised when a small argument broke out between proponents of the drumming schools of JANGGU and BUK regarding which were the superior musicians. Fueled by musical differences, debate between the two groups escalated into war. Nalmoe, of the Buk faction, and Seolwoo of the Janggu faction, subsequently meet a tragic Shakespearean fate, apropos Romeo and Juliet. Through witnessing such events, the people of the village unite, realizing their differences resulted from petty ignorance, and subsequently reunite as a community. Through this narrative, we seek to explore ways in which communities might overcome difference in order to evolve, not only transcending such differences, but becoming something more solidified

The Eighth Day ∣ The Continuo Theatre

Oct. 7 ~ 8 (Wed ~ Thu) 20:00 ∣ 70min

|
- The inspiration for the new puppet performance of Continuo Theatre “The Eighth Day” became the oldest written mention of human history – fragments of myths from the area of ancient Near East, the Sumerian texts, Akkadian, Hittite or Israelis referring not only to the origins of human civilization, but also the eternal foundation, which constitute the essence of the human race, companies and individuals, regardless of time, cultural differences and historical background.
Dramatization and reflow of original mythological motifs created production combining elements of physical acting and puppet theater and live music. It is a story about the ambiguity of human existence. The human desire for immortality and overcome the earthly destiny on the one hand, on the other hand its permanent inclination to meanness, philistinism, envy, fear, and anger.
Three stories narrated parallelly in short sequences connect together at the end to express no possibility to overcome the human destiny and its contradictoriness.
The main character of the first story called Appu saw a fratricide of his sons through a scene of fighting cocks during the wedding night. He refused to accept such destiny and believed that he could change the destiny by clever and cautious behavior. But he didn’t expect that he couldn’t control his wife’s desire for having a child and late on his son’s desire for justice.
The second story is about the king Keret. Although he is a fair-minded, loving and powerful man, he lost everything asking desperately: “Why me?”. He wanted to have a wife, children, power and property again. Therefore he promised to sacrifice his first-born son to pay off the destiny, if he got once more a chance. He is heard and followed voices, which led him through a bloody way to a new life. But when the time of repaying come, he refused to pay off the chance and tried to outwit the destiny. Nevertheless the destiny took the price on its own, when the king went mad and killed his son.
The third part tells us a story about the power of human emotions, love, suffering, self-sacrifice, will and deep believe in love. Inanna had a dream about the death of her beloved husband Damuzi. She went to the underworld to beg for his life. Ereskigal – the ruler of the underworld, promised her, that Damuzi would live, if she managed to hang on a hook for three days and nights. During the time, when Inanna was hanging on the hook, Damuzi was desperately looking for her. After three days Inanna could leave the underworld, but only in case she finded a replacement for her. She promised the first person she would meet. She was going up crying and she didn’t want to look into the face of the person she was passing because of the remorse. Later on she realized who she had just passed.. Damuzi! Damuzi!
